Summer 2012

My design for a Wenlock mascot as part of the 2012 Olympics 'Strolls Discovery' trail in London along with other artists. My theme was film and covers the following genres of cinema: Film Noir, Action & Adventure, Sci-Fi, Westerns and Period Dramas.

It was on public display in Leicester Square for the duration of the Olympics and Paralympic games and was auctioned for charity with a final bid of £5925. My thanks to Sarah Jane at Wild in Art for the opportunity and to Shirley & Arthur who provided the photos below.

More images can be found by googling Filmstar Wenlock.

Here is the official text from the site:

Lights, camera, action! I'm feeling very glamorous waiting on the red carpet to attend the première of a new film. Will Filmstar Wenlock see anyone famous today in Leicester Square? Filmstar Wenlock's exclusive wardrobe is by artist Mark Harrison, a freelance illustrator and painter with over 15 years experience.

As part of the Mayor of London Presents programme of free cultural events and activities for the 2012 Games, Stroll will take participants through different cityscapes all around the capital. 84 official Olympic and Paralympic Mascot sculptures will guide tourists and Londoners alike.

Each sculpture of Wenlock and Mandeville is around 2m in height and is often individually and colourfully designed, corresponding to their immediate surroundings while capturing an element of London life.

The ‘Wenlocks and Mandevilles’ were customised by leading artists and joined by a host of other exciting Olympic memorabilia chosen to help raise cash for the Mayor's Fund for London, and help create a lasting legacy for disadvantaged young Londoners.
A fantastic £608,000 gross was raised from the sale of 82 mascots. All profits will go to the Mayor’s Fund for London.
The Mayor’s Fund for London was set up in 2009 to help improve the life chances and aspirations of disadvantaged children, young people and their families in London. The money will help fund the most effective child poverty projects in London.
